Overview

ShigETEC is a live, attenuated oral combination vaccine candidate designed to protect against infections caused by *Shigella* species and enterotoxigenic *Escherichia coli* (ETEC), two major causes of diarrheal disease worldwide. The vaccine strain is a non-invasive *Shigella* that lacks the LPS O-antigen and expresses ETEC toxoids. This design enables immune recognition of conserved antigens shared among different types of *Shigella* and ETEC, potentially providing broad protection. Oral immunization with ShigETEC has been shown in Phase 1 clinical trials to be well tolerated and safe up to four doses at 5 × 10^10 CFU, inducing robust systemic and mucosal immune responses against both pathogens. The vaccine is being developed for use in travelers, military personnel visiting endemic regions, and children in low- and middle-income countries.
