Overview

Shilajit is a natural substance used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. It is a sticky, tar-like phytocomplex that oozes from rocks in high mountain ranges such as the Himalayas and Altai. Shilajit forms over centuries from the slow decomposition of plant material and contains 60–80% humic substances (mainly fulvic acid and humic acid), 20–40% minerals (including calcium, magnesium, potassium), trace elements (such as selenium and zinc), amino acids (notably glycine), fatty acids, proteins, phenolic compounds like caffeic acid and gallic acid, dibenzo-α-pyrones, triterpenes, sterols, resinous materials and other bioactive molecules[5][6][8][10]. The primary active component is fulvic acid—a potent antioxidant thought to contribute to neuroprotective effects by inhibiting tau protein aggregation implicated in Alzheimer’s disease[1][9]. Shilajit also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties; it acts as an adaptogen supporting stress response; may enhance testosterone production; supports bone health by increasing cell turnover; has potential antiviral activity due to fulvic acid content; may improve energy metabolism via mitochondrial function enhancement[3][4][7]. Despite its long traditional use for conditions ranging from cognitive decline to male infertility and diabetes management[2], robust clinical evidence for most indications remains limited.
