Shinbaro

Shinbaro (GCSB-5) is a purified herbal extract preparation composed of six medicinal herbs: *Acanthopanax sessiliflorus*, *Achyranthes bidentata*, *Angelica gigas*, *Cibotium barometz*, *Phellodendron amurense*, and *Eucommia ulmoides*. Developed by GC Biopharma (formerly Green Cross Corporation) in collaboration with the Jaseng Medical Foundation, it is primarily indicated for the treatment of osteoarthritis and other inflammatory joint conditions. The drug exerts anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and nitric oxide, and by suppressing the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). It has been marketed in South Korea as a prescription drug for osteoarthritis since 2011, often positioned as a safer alternative to traditional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) due to a lower incidence of gastrointestinal side effects.
