Short ragweed allergenic extract is a biological product used for allergen-specific immunotherapy. It is derived from the pollen of *Ambrosia artemisiifolia* (short ragweed) and is administered to individuals sensitized to ragweed pollen to reduce allergic symptoms. The extract works by modulating the immune system, aiming to induce immune tolerance to ragweed allergens. This involves a shift from a T helper 2 (Th2) cell response to a T helper 1 (Th1) cell response, leading to decreased levels of interleukins IL-4 and IL-5, and increased production of IL-10. It also promotes the production of IgG-blocking antibodies that compete with IgE antibodies for allergen binding, stimulates the proliferation of regulatory T lymphocytes, and reduces the presence of mast cells and eosinophils. The product is standardized based on its Antigen E (Amb a 1) content, which is considered a primary allergen component.
