Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Shuanghuanglian injection is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) preparation derived from the extracts of three medicinal herbs: *Lonicera japonica* (honeysuckle), *Scutellaria baicalensis* (Chinese skullcap), and *Forsythia suspensa*. It is widely utilized in China for the treatment of acute respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia, tonsillitis, and pharyngitis. The injection's therapeutic profile is attributed to its primary active constituents—chlorogenic acid, baicalin, and forsythoside A—which exhibit synergistic antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory effects. Mechanistically, it modulates the immune response by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha and IL-6, and interferes with viral and bacterial pathogenesis. Despite its clinical prevalence, it is noted for a relatively high risk of hypersensitivity reactions, necessitating careful clinical monitoring.
