Overview

Shudi Pingchan Granules is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulation used as an adjunctive therapy for Parkinson’s disease. The granules are composed of multiple herbal ingredients, including Rehmannia glutinosa (熟地黄), Lycium barbarum (枸杞), Taxillus chinensis (桑寄生), Gastrodia elata (天麻), Bombyx batryticatus (僵蚕), Curcuma zedoaria or Curcuma phaeocaulis (莪术), Paeonia lactiflora root (白芍药), Arisaema rhizome preparation or Pinellia ternata preparation depending on context and region, but typically Arisaema erubescens or A. heterophyllum in TCM practice for "天南星", Buthus martensii scorpion preparation ("全蝎"), and Scolopendra subspinipes ("蜈蚣"). The granules are administered orally twice daily, morning and evening[1][2]. Clinical studies indicate that Shudi Pingchan Granules, when combined with conventional Western medicine such as levodopa and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), can improve both motor symptoms and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Specifically, the combination therapy has been shown to reduce scores on the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale Part III (UPDRS III) more effectively than conventional treatment alone. It also improves anxiety, depression, sleep quality, autonomic function, and overall quality of life in patients with Parkinson’s disease[1][2]. The mechanism of action is not fully elucidated but may involve inhibition of dopaminergic neuron apoptosis by downregulating apoptotic gene expression via suppression of ERK pathway overactivation[1].
