Shufeng Jiedu

Shufeng Jiedu (SFJD) is a Chinese herbal patent medicine approved by the China National Medical Products Administration in 2009 (Identifier No. Z20090047) and manufactured according to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2020 standards. It is available in capsule form and contains extracts from eight standardized medicinal plants: * *Reynoutria japonica* Houtt. (Polygonaceae) * *Forsythia suspensa* (Thunb.) Vahl (Oleaceae) * *Isatis indigotica* (Brassicaceae) * *Bupleurum chinense* DC. (Apiaceae) * *Patrinia scabiosifolia f. scabiosifolia* (Caprifoliaceae) * *Verbena officinalis* L. (Verbenaceae) * *Phragmites australis subsp. australis* (Poaceae) * *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* (Fabaceae) SFJD is primarily indicated for treating acute upper respiratory tract infections with symptoms like fever, sore throat, headache, nasal congestion, runny nose, and cough, and influenza with wind-heat syndrome. It is also used as an adjunctive treatment for COVID-19 and is being studied for the acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). Its mechanism of action is considered to be multi-faceted, including antiviral, antibacterial, immune-enhancing, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and immunomodulatory effects. Research suggests involvement of pathways such as C-type lectin receptor signaling, tumor necrosis factor signaling, and hypoxia-inducible factor-1 signaling. A component, verbenalin, has shown anti-inflammatory effects via GPR18. Clinical trials have demonstrated potential benefits in reducing symptom duration in respiratory infections and attenuating symptoms in mild to moderate COVID-19.
