Shugan Hewei granules is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formulation developed by the Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine and the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease (rGERD), specifically targeting patients who present with the TCM syndrome pattern of qi stagnation and phlegm obstruction. The formulation is designed to 'soothe the liver' and 'harmonize the stomach,' which involves regulating gastrointestinal motility and improving esophageal clearance. In clinical studies, it has been evaluated as a therapeutic alternative or adjunct to proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as rabeprazole for patients who do not respond adequately to standard acid-suppression therapy.
