Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Shugan Jieyu (Shugan Jieyu Capsule) is a proprietary Chinese medicine composed primarily of *Hypericum perforatum* (St. John's Wort) and *Acanthopanax senticosus* (Siberian Ginseng)[3][4][6][7]. It is approved in China for the treatment of depression and has also been studied for use in generalized anxiety disorder, essential hypertension with insomnia or anxiety/depression, and psychiatric symptoms associated with epilepsy[2][4][5][7]. The mechanism of action is believed to involve modulation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, neuroprotection via immune system modulation, anti-fatigue effects from Acanthopanax senticosus, and alteration of gut microbiota composition[2][6][8]. Modern pharmacological studies attribute antidepressant effects to hypericin from Hypericum perforatum[2], while Acanthopanax senticosus contributes adaptogenic properties. Shugan Jieyu was approved by the China Food and Drug Administration in 2008 for clinical prescription in depression[4].
