Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Shugan Jieyu + escitalopram is a combination therapy consisting of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Shugan Jieyu capsule and the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) escitalopram. Shugan Jieyu is a standardized herbal formulation primarily composed of *Hypericum perforatum* (St. John's Wort) and *Acanthopanax senticosus* (Siberian ginseng), which is widely used in China for mild-to-moderate depression. Escitalopram is a potent SSRI that selectively inhibits the serotonin transporter (SERT). This combination is frequently utilized in clinical practice and research in China, such as studies conducted by the Shandong Mental Health Center, to achieve a faster onset of antidepressant action, improve response rates in patients with Major Depressive Disorder, and potentially mitigate the side effects associated with high-dose SSRI monotherapy.
