Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Shugan Jieyu Capsule is a proprietary Chinese medicine widely used in China for the treatment of mild to moderate depression and related psychiatric symptoms such as anxiety and insomnia. It is composed primarily of two herbal ingredients: Hypericum perforatum (St John's Wort) and Acanthopanax senticosus (Siberian Ginseng). The capsule has demonstrated antidepressant effects in clinical studies and is approved by the China Food and Drug Administration since 2008 for prescription use. Its mechanisms are believed to involve modulation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin (5-HT) and dopamine, regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, immune system modulation, neuroprotection, anti-fatigue effects, as well as alteration of gut microbiota composition. Systemic pharmacology analyses suggest involvement in PI3K-Akt signaling pathways relevant to depression[1][2][3][4][5].
