Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Shugan Jieyu Capsule is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulation approved in China for the treatment of mild to moderate depression. It is composed of two primary herbal extracts: *Acanthopanax senticosus* (Siberian ginseng) and *Hypericum perforatum* (St. John's wort). The therapeutic mechanism is primarily attributed to the active constituents of *Hypericum perforatum*, such as hypericin and hyperforin, which inhibit the reuptake of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, similar to conventional antidepressants. *Acanthopanax senticosus* provides adaptogenic and neuroprotective effects, potentially modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, has conducted clinical research evaluating the efficacy of Shugan Jieyu Capsule in combination with zolpidem for patients with insomnia disorder and comorbid depressive symptoms, aiming to improve sleep quality and cognitive function.
