Overview
Shugan Wendan Tang is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal decoction derived from the classical Wendan Tang formula, modified to include liver-soothing (Shugan) properties. It is primarily composed of herbs such as Pinellia, Bamboo shavings, Bitter orange, Tangerine peel, Poria, and Licorice, often supplemented with Bupleurum and Scutellaria. The formula is traditionally used to treat syndromes characterized by liver qi stagnation and phlegm-heat internal harassment. In modern clinical research, it is being evaluated for its potential to treat metabolic syndrome and H-type essential hypertension (hypertension accompanied by high homocysteine levels). The therapeutic approach focuses on regulating metabolic dysfunction, reducing inflammation, and lowering homocysteine levels to mitigate cardiovascular risk.
