Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Shuganjieyu capsule is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine (TCM) preparation consisting of a combined extract of *Hypericum perforatum* (St. John's wort) and *Eleutherococcus senticosus* (Siberian ginseng) in an approximate 6:5 ratio. Approved by the China State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) in 2008 for the treatment of mild to moderate depression, it is currently being evaluated as an adjunctive therapy to lithium for bipolar depression in the AGTs-BD trial led by the Shanghai Mental Health Center. The drug's mechanism of action involves the regulation of monoamine neurotransmitters, modulation of cyclic adenosine monophosphate response element binding protein (CREB) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression, and enhancement of connectivity within the basal ganglia.
