Shuganzhi is a botanical pharmaceutical candidate developed by Shanghai Fangxin Pharmaceutical Technology for the treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). It consists of total flavonoids extracted from the root of *Scutellaria baicalensis* Georgi, with baicalin serving as a primary active constituent. The drug is designed to regulate lipid metabolism, reduce hepatic fat accumulation, and alleviate liver inflammation. Its mechanism of action involves the activation of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway and the modulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-alpha) and sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP-1), which collectively inhibit lipogenesis and promote fatty acid oxidation. Shuganzhi has advanced to Phase 3 clinical trials in China, specifically targeting patients with NAFLD and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).
