Shuigui Cataplasm

Shuigui Cataplasm, also known as Shuigui Babugao, is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) hospital-made preparation developed by the Shanghai Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is specifically formulated for the external treatment of liver cirrhosis and associated ascites. The preparation is typically applied topically to the Shenque point (umbilicus), a practice known as umbilical therapy, to facilitate the transdermal absorption of its active constituents. The formulation is based on TCM principles of nourishing yin, softening hardness, and promoting diuresis to resolve fluid accumulation. Clinical and experimental studies suggest that the cataplasm helps reduce abdominal circumference and improve liver function by modulating fluid metabolism and potentially regulating the expression of water channel proteins. It is used as an adjuvant therapy alongside conventional Western medical treatments for portal hypertension and cirrhotic complications.
