Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Shumian capsules (also known as Shumian capsule or SMC) are a proprietary traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) capsule used to treat insomnia, including insomnia with depression or anxiety. The formula is a multi-herb botanical mixture of eight herbs: Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (Suanzaoren), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), Albiziae Flos (Hehuanhua), Albiziae Cortex (Hehuanpi), Bombyx batryticatus (Jiangcan), Cicadae Periostracum (Chantui), and Junci Medulla (Dengxincao). Developed and manufactured by Guizhou Dalong Pharmaceutical, Shumian capsules soothe the liver, relieve depression, and calm the mind. Preclinical studies suggest that its sedative and antidepressant effects are mediated through the activation of melatonin receptors MT1 and MT2, as well as the modulation of orexin receptors OX1R and OX2R. Clinical trials have demonstrated that Shumian capsules significantly improve sleep quality (as measured by PSQI, ISI, and polysomnography) and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety in patients with insomnia.
