Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Shuxin Anshen decoction (SXAS) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed by the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine for the treatment of chronic insomnia, specifically targeting patients with Yang deficiency syndrome (often characterized as Heart-Kidney Yang deficiency). The formula is composed of several botanical ingredients, including *Ziziphus jujuba* var. *spinosa*, *Cistanche deserticola*, and *Morinda officinalis*, which are traditionally used to warm the Yang, tonify the kidneys, and calm the spirit (Anshen). Mechanistically, research indicates that SXAS may alleviate sleep disturbances by modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, regulating the balance of excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters such as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and serotonin (5-HT), and potentially influencing the gut-microbiota-brain axis. It is primarily utilized as a hospital preparation within the Guangdong Provincial Hospital system and has been the subject of clinical trials to validate its efficacy and safety in chronic insomnia populations.
