Overview

shVRK1 is an experimental short hairpin RNA (shRNA) construct designed to silence the expression of Vaccinia-related kinase 1 (VRK1). VRK1 is a serine/threonine protein kinase that plays a critical role in cell proliferation by regulating cell-cycle progression and mediating cellular responses to stress signals. Research indicates that VRK1 is highly expressed in small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the uterine cervix (SCNEC), particularly in cases with low expression of its paralog, VRK2. By knocking down VRK1, shVRK1 suppresses tumor growth and enhances sensitivity to oxidative stress, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic strategy for aggressive neuroendocrine cervical cancers.
