si-CAV2 is a small interfering RNA (siRNA) designed to silence the expression of the caveolin-2 (CAV2) gene. In the context of oncology research, specifically renal cell carcinoma (RCC), si-CAV2 is used as a tool to investigate the role of CAV2 in tumor progression. Studies have shown that CAV2 is a direct target of the tumor-suppressive microRNA miR-218 and is often upregulated in RCC clinical specimens. By silencing CAV2, researchers observed a significant inhibition of cancer cell migration and invasion, suggesting that CAV2 contributes to metastatic processes through the regulation of focal adhesion and tight junction pathways. The drug acts via the RNA interference (RNAi) pathway, where it mediates the sequence-specific degradation of CAV2 mRNA, thereby preventing the translation of the CAV2 protein.
