si-EpCAM is a small interfering RNA (siRNA) research construct designed to silence the expression of the Epithelial Cell Adhesion Molecule (EpCAM), a transmembrane glycoprotein that is frequently overexpressed in various epithelial cancers and serves as a marker for cancer stem cells. By targeting EpCAM mRNA for degradation through the RNA interference (RNAi) pathway, si-EpCAM effectively reduces EpCAM protein levels. This knockdown has been shown in preclinical research to inhibit cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, while also suppressing oncogenic signaling pathways such as Ras/Raf/ERK and downregulating matrix metalloproteinases like MMP-9. It is primarily utilized as an experimental reagent in laboratory settings to study the functional role of EpCAM in tumor progression and to explore the potential of EpCAM-targeted therapeutic strategies, particularly in breast cancer models.
