Overview
SIG-002 is an investigational encapsulated cell therapy developed for the treatment of type 1 diabetes. It utilizes Sigilon Therapeutics' proprietary Shielded Living Therapeutics™ (SLTx) platform, which features Afibromer™ technology—a chemically modified alginate biomaterial designed to encapsulate engineered human islet cells. These cells, derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), are engineered to produce insulin in response to blood glucose levels. The encapsulation technology aims to protect the cells from the host's immune system and prevent the foreign body response (fibrosis), potentially providing a functional cure for type 1 diabetes without the need for chronic systemic immunosuppression. Eli Lilly acquired Sigilon in 2023 to advance this program.
