Overview

Sihogayonggolmoryeo-tang is a traditional Korean herbal medicine (Hanbang) formulation derived from the classic medical text *Shanghan Lun*. It is primarily utilized to treat neuropsychiatric symptoms associated with **hwa-byung**, a Korean culture-bound syndrome characterized by suppressed anger, anxiety, and depression. The formulation typically consists of several herbal and mineral components, including *Bupleurum falcatum*, *Scutellaria baicalensis*, *Fossilia Mastodi* (dragon bone), and *Ostrea gigas* (oyster shell). It is believed to exert its therapeutic effects by modulating the neuroendocrine system, specifically the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and GABAergic neurotransmission, to provide anxiolytic and sedative benefits. The Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI) has supported phase 4 clinical trials to evaluate its efficacy in managing anxiety within the context of hwa-byung.
