Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sihuang San (四黄散) is a classic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula composed of four "yellow" herbs: *Rheum palmatum* (Dahuang), *Scutellaria baicalensis* (Huangqin), *Phellodendron amurense* (Huangbai), and *Coptis chinensis* (Huanglian). It is renowned for its potent heat-clearing and detoxifying properties, which translate to anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antipyretic activities in modern pharmacology. The formula is widely used in both human and veterinary medicine. In humans, it is often applied topically to treat inflammatory skin conditions, mastitis, and sores, or administered orally for gastrointestinal heat-syndromes. In veterinary practice, it is a standard treatment for heat stress, infectious gastroenteritis, and various inflammatory diseases in livestock and poultry. The therapeutic efficacy is attributed to a synergistic blend of alkaloids (like berberine), flavonoids (like baicalin), and anthraquinones (like emodin).
