Overview

Silk peptide is a low-molecular-weight hydrolysate derived from silk protein, typically extracted from silkworm (Bombyx mori) cocoons. It is composed mainly of short peptide chains and free amino acids, such as alanine, glycine, and serine. Silk peptide has demonstrated various bioactivities in preclinical studies, including immune-modulating (e.g., increasing NK cell cytolytic activity and T helper 1 cytokine production), anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, neuroprotective, metabolic (stimulating lipolysis, reducing adipose tissue, increasing fat oxidation via AMPK and PPAR-α upregulation), and antibacterial effects. Mechanistically, these effects are mediated largely through modulation of immune cell function (macrophage and NK cell activation), cytokine production, upregulation of energy metabolism signaling pathways, and inhibition of adipogenesis. Silk peptide is mainly used as a dietary supplement and as a bioactive ingredient in cosmetic and personal care products for its moisturizing and protective properties, particularly in the skin and hair, where its small size allows penetration and improved moisture retention[1][2][3][5][6][7].
