Overview

Silk sericin is a natural protein-based biologic extracted from the cocoons of the silkworm *Bombyx mori*. It is investigated primarily as a topical wound-healing agent and additive to standard antimicrobial treatments, such as silver zinc sulfadiazine (SSD) cream, for the treatment of second-degree burn wounds. Sericin promotes wound re-epithelialization and tissue repair by stimulating the migration and proliferation of fibroblasts and keratinocytes, activating collagen production, and modulating inflammatory pathways (including the downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-alpha and IL-1beta). In clinical trials conducted in Thailand, the addition of silk sericin to SSD cream significantly accelerated the time to complete wound healing in patients with second-degree burns compared to SSD cream alone, without causing adverse systemic effects or infections.
