Unlike conventional platinum-based therapies or many other silver complexes that target thioredoxin reductase or induce apoptosis, silver(dppe)2 triflate triggers paraptosis. Paraptosis is a form of programmed cell death characterized by extensive cytoplasmic vacuolization, often originating from the swelling of the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria. Research indicates that silver(dppe)2 triflate is effective even in p53-deficient or platinum-resistant cell lines, suggesting its potential as a candidate for treating refractory malignancies.
