**Silver diammine fluoride** is a topical inorganic coordination compound used as a non-restorative anti-caries treatment. In the University of Hong Kong root-caries research program, it was generally administered as a **38% topical solution** to exposed root surfaces of older adults. Silver provides broad local antimicrobial activity against cariogenic oral bacteria, while fluoride reduces demineralization and promotes remineralization of dentin and other tooth mineral; silver-containing reaction products may also protect dentin collagen from degradation. The University of Hong Kong evaluated annual application for prevention of new root-surface caries and arrest of active lesions in older adults in Hong Kong and Guangzhou.
