Silver dihydrogen citrate (SDC) is a synthetic antimicrobial compound formed by the electrochemical reaction of silver and citric acid. It is a stabilized complex of one silver ion weakly bound to one citrate ion (AgC6H7O7), resulting in a water-soluble salt with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. SDC acts rapidly against bacteria, fungi, and viruses by two main mechanisms: deactivation of structural and metabolic membrane proteins via interaction with thiol groups on the cell wall/membrane, leading to lysis; and entry into microorganisms through membrane transport proteins due to its citric acid component ("Trojan Horse" effect), where it binds DNA and intracellular proteins causing irreversible damage that halts metabolic/reproductive functions. SDC is used in commercial/residential disinfectants, personal care products as an antimicrobial/preservative/deodorant active ingredient, food processing sanitizers, agriculture applications, industrial biofilm control agents, and has been explored for pharmaceutical uses such as topical therapy for acne vulgaris[5][8][10].
