silver fluoride

Silver fluoride (AgF) is a topical cariostatic and antimicrobial agent used in dentistry to arrest and prevent dental caries. It consists of silver, which provides antimicrobial activity against cariogenic bacteria, and fluoride, which promotes the remineralization of tooth enamel and strengthens its crystalline structure. In clinical practice, particularly in Australia, it is often applied as a 40% solution, sometimes followed by stannous fluoride to reduce staining and enhance efficacy. The University of Adelaide is currently investigating its use in a large-scale trial targeting Indigenous Australian children to address early childhood caries through non-invasive application.
