Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are nanoscale particles of elemental silver with potent antimicrobial properties. They exert their effects primarily by disrupting microbial cell membranes, interfering with cellular respiration and metabolic processes, generating reactive oxygen species (free radicals), and releasing silver ions that bind to thiol groups in essential enzymes—leading to cell death. Silver nanoparticles can also interact with DNA and other cellular components. Clinically, AgNPs are used in wound dressings (e.g., Acticoat), burn treatments (e.g., Silvadene), and as adjunctive agents in cancer therapy (e.g., Cytolux). Their applications extend to drug delivery systems and tissue regeneration due to their large surface area and reactivity[1][2][3][4].
