Overview
Silver protein acetyl tannate is a colloidal coordination complex consisting of silver ions bound to a protein matrix (silver proteinate) and associated with acetyltannate, a derivative of tannic acid. Developed by Leyh-Pharma GmbH, it is formulated as a nasal spray or drops for the treatment of acute uncomplicated viral rhinitis (common cold). The drug exerts its therapeutic effect through a dual mechanism: silver ions provide broad-spectrum antimicrobial and antiviral activity, while the acetyltannate component acts as an astringent on the nasal mucosa to reduce inflammation and secretions. A multicenter Phase 3 clinical trial (SEAT 3%) has evaluated the efficacy and safety of a 3% nasal spray formulation in patients with acute uncomplicated viral rhinitis.
