Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Silver zeolite is a **synthetic or natural zeolite material exchanged or loaded with silver ions**, engineered primarily for its sustained and broad-spectrum **antimicrobial activity**. The mechanism of action involves controlled release of silver ions from the zeolite matrix, which exert **bactericidal and fungicidal effects** through disruption of microbial cellular structures and metabolic processes. In medicine, silver zeolite has been incorporated into dental materials, tissue conditioners, wound dressings, and topical or temporary filling agents to prevent and reduce microbial contamination and infection. Silver zeolite also finds application in dental products, often enhancing the antibacterial function of glass ionomer cements and mineral trioxide aggregate—demonstrated by its efficacy against organisms like *Staphylococcus aureus*, *Escherichia coli*, and *Candida albicans* through both in vitro and clinical studies. Zeomin is a registered medical product, in some countries, employing silver zeolite for dental disinfection and plaque reduction.
