silybin phospholipid complex

Silybin phospholipid complex is a formulation that combines silybin—the most active and abundant flavonolignan component of the milk thistle extract (silymarin)—with phospholipids (typically phosphatidylcholine) to enhance its oral bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy. Silybin itself has poor water and oil solubility, resulting in low absorption when taken orally. Complexing it with phospholipids increases its lipophilicity, allowing for improved passage across cell membranes and better systemic absorption[1][3][5]. The primary mechanism of action is hepatoprotection through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytoprotective effects, as well as modulation of mitogenic signaling pathways involved in liver health[4]. This formulation is used mainly to support liver function in conditions such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), chronic hepatitis C infection (especially when conventional antiviral therapy cannot be used), alcoholic liver disease, cirrhosis, and other forms of toxic or metabolic liver injury[6][8]. Clinical studies have shown benefits including reduction in markers of oxidative stress and inflammation; improvement in hepatic enzyme levels; decreased fibrosis progression; and enhanced glutathione production.
