Overview

SimeCOS is a therapeutic chitooligosaccharide (ChOS) developed by Genís, an Icelandic biotechnology company. It is designed to target and modulate YKL-40 (also known as Chitinase-3-like protein 1) and other chitinase-like proteins (CLPs). YKL-40 is a biomarker and mediator of chronic inflammation, tissue remodeling, and fibrosis, and is elevated in various inflammatory and malignant conditions. By inhibiting or modulating these proteins, SimeCOS aims to treat a broad range of disorders, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers. The drug is currently in the preclinical or early research stage, although a clinical study was conducted in 2017 at Herlev Hospital to evaluate its potential.
