Overview

Similac Probiotic Tri-Blend is a multi-strain probiotic supplement developed by Abbott Laboratories in collaboration with Chr. Hansen. It was specifically designed for use in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) for preterm and very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants. The product contains live bacterial strains, including *Bifidobacterium infantis* (Bb-02) and *Streptococcus thermophilus* (TH-4), intended to promote healthy gut microbiome development and reduce the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). In October 2023, the FDA issued a warning letter classifying the product as an unapproved new drug and unlicensed biological product, citing safety concerns regarding its use in preterm infants. Consequently, Abbott discontinued sales and initiated a voluntary recall in November 2023.
