Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Simvast CR is a controlled-release formulation of simvastatin developed by Hanmi Pharmaceutical Company Limited for the treatment of hyperlipidemia and dyslipidemia. As a small molecule HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, it works by inhibiting the rate-limiting enzyme in the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway in the liver. This action results in a significant reduction of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and apolipoprotein B, while simultaneously increasing HDL cholesterol levels. The controlled-release delivery system was designed as part of Hanmi's incrementally modified drug platform to allow for morning dosing, providing a more flexible alternative to the traditional evening dosing required for immediate-release statins. It has been specifically evaluated in Phase 4 clinical trials for its efficacy and safety in patients with stage 3-5 chronic kidney disease.
