simvastatin + aspirin

This combination therapy involves the repurposing of simvastatin, an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, and aspirin, a cyclooxygenase inhibitor, for the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in cancer patients. Investigated by the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, the regimen is evaluated in patients with solid tumors or lymphoma who are at intermediate to high risk for VTE while initiating chemotherapy. Simvastatin, traditionally used for hypercholesterolemia, is utilized here for its pleiotropic effects, including the reduction of inflammatory cytokines and angiogenic factors, while aspirin serves as an anti-platelet agent. The efficacy of the combination is measured by changes in soluble P-selectin (sP-selectin) levels, a biomarker predictive of thrombotic events in oncological settings.
