Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is not an intentional combination therapy but rather a drug interaction of clinical significance. Simvastatin is a cholesterol-lowering medication (statin) administered as an inactive lactone prodrug. Dabigatran etexilate is an oral direct thrombin inhibitor anticoagulant used to prevent stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation. When used together, simvastatin can inhibit P-glycoprotein, potentially increasing dabigatran absorption and blood levels, which may lead to an increased risk of major hemorrhage.
