Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Simvastatin + ursodeoxycholic acid is a combination therapy being evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial led by Chang Gung Memorial Hospital for the treatment of stable liver cirrhosis. Simvastatin is a small molecule HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor traditionally used for hypercholesterolemia, but it is being repurposed here for its pleiotropic effects, including the reduction of hepatic inflammation and fibrosis. Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is a naturally occurring bile acid used to treat cholestatic liver diseases. The study investigates whether the combination of these two agents can synergistically improve liver function, modulate the gut-liver axis by balancing gut microbiota, and normalize bile acid metabolism in patients who have achieved viral eradication or have inactive hepatitis.
