Simvastatin-acid sodium salt is an investigational topical small molecule formulation (1% ointment) developed by Nicolaus Copernicus University for the treatment of active non-segmental vitiligo. While simvastatin is traditionally an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor used for dyslipidemia, this specific hydroxy-acid form is applied topically to leverage its immunomodulatory properties. It is hypothesized to inhibit disease progression and promote repigmentation by modulating T-cell responses and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) signaling pathways, which are central to the autoimmune destruction of melanocytes. The drug was evaluated in the EVRAAS pilot clinical trial (NCT03247400).
