Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Simvastatin is a small molecule HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor traditionally used to treat hyperlipidemia. Assiut University is investigating a novel topical formulation of simvastatin, utilizing cubosomal nanoparticles, for the treatment of alopecia areata. This autoimmune condition is characterized by T-cell mediated destruction of hair follicles; simvastatin is hypothesized to treat this by exerting pleiotropic immunomodulatory effects, such as inhibiting T-cell activation and reducing inflammatory cytokine levels. The drug is being evaluated in a Phase 4 clinical trial, both as a standalone topical treatment and in combination with fractional CO2 laser-assisted delivery, to compare its efficacy against conventional topical corticosteroids like mometasone furoate.
