While simvastatin is traditionally administered orally for hypercholesterolemia, this specific formulation delivers 2.2 mg of the drug in a 0.15 ml methylcellulose carrier directly into periodontal pockets. In this localized application, simvastatin is intended to leverage its pleiotropic anti-inflammatory and bone-anabolic properties to improve clinical attachment levels and increase alveolar bone height. It is typically used as an adjunct to mechanical therapies such as scaling and root planing in patients with Stage III, Grade B periodontitis.
