Overview

Sinapic acid is a naturally occurring hydroxycinnamic acid and a member of the phenylpropanoid family. It is widely distributed in the plant kingdom and found in various fruits, vegetables, cereal grains, oilseed crops, spices, and medicinal plants. Sinapic acid is best known as a matrix for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry due to its ability to absorb laser radiation and donate protons to analytes. Biologically, it exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial (including antibacterial), antidiabetic, anticancer and anti-anxiety activities demonstrated primarily in preclinical studies. Mechanistically it acts as an inhibitor of histone deacetylase (HDAC) with an IC50 of 2.27 mM and also inhibits angiotensin-converting enzyme I (ACE-I). It has been shown to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels as well as improve oxidative stress parameters in animal models[1][6][7].
