Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sinapine is a naturally occurring alkaloid and choline ester of sinapic acid found primarily in the seeds of Brassicaceae plants, such as mustard and rapeseed. It exhibits potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties. In the context of dermatological research, sinapine is being evaluated (often as the active ingredient 'Act S') by Isispharma and academic collaborators for its ability to mitigate mitochondrial oxidative stress and reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction in keratinocytes. This dual-targeting approach, which addresses both oxidative stress and chemokine-driven inflammation (such as CXCL10 suppression when combined with Bifidobacterium longum), represents a novel topical therapeutic strategy for the treatment and prevention of vitiligo progression. Additionally, sinapine has been studied for its potential neuroprotective effects as an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor and its ability to modulate P-glycoprotein expression.
