Overview

Sinapis nigrea semen refers to the seeds of the black mustard plant (*Brassica nigra* or *Sinapis nigra*), which are traditionally processed into mustard flour for medicinal use. When applied topically as a poultice or thorax wrap, the glucosinolates in the seeds (primarily sinigrin) are hydrolyzed by the enzyme myrosinase in the presence of water to release allyl isothiocyanate. This volatile mustard oil acts as a rubefacient and counter-irritant by activating TRPA1 and TRPV1 receptors on sensory nerve endings, which increases local blood circulation and induces a sensation of warmth. The ARCIM Institute has conducted clinical research on these wraps to evaluate their psychophysiological effects, including impacts on heart rate variability and respiratory activity in healthy subjects. Historically, it has been utilized for treating respiratory catarrh, bronchitis, and various musculoskeletal conditions such as rheumatism and neuralgia.
