Overview
SinuSurf is a topical sinonasal surfactant that was previously commercially available and investigated for use in the management of recalcitrant chronic rhinosinusitis. It is not a pharmaceutical drug in the traditional sense but rather a surfactant solution designed to be used as an adjunctive therapy during sinonasal irrigation. SinuSurf demonstrated significant in vitro antimicrobial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, including reduction of biofilm formation by these pathogens. The addition of SinuSurf to topical antibiotics such as mupirocin or gentamicin improved their effectiveness at lower concentrations, suggesting potential utility for patients with chronic rhinosinusitis complicated by resistant bacterial biofilms[7]. The exact composition and mechanism are based on its surfactant properties, which disrupt microbial membranes and biofilms.
