SiPc-pip is a silicon(IV) phthalocyanine derivative that serves as a photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy (PDT). It is characterized by a silicon(IV) phthalocyanine core with axial piperazine-containing ligands. In research settings, SiPc-pip is often utilized as a precursor or a non-targeted control for the development of tumor-specific photosensitizers, such as biotin-conjugated derivatives (SiPc-biotin). Upon irradiation with specific wavelengths of light, SiPc-pip generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), which induce oxidative stress and subsequent apoptosis or necrosis in cancer cells. Compared to its targeted derivatives, SiPc-pip exhibits lower selectivity for cancer cells and higher dark toxicity toward normal human cell lines, such as LO2 liver cells.
