siPTENP1 is a small interfering RNA (siRNA) designed to silence the expression of the long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) PTENP1, which is a pseudogene of the PTEN tumor suppressor. PTENP1 normally acts as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) by sequestering microRNAs (such as miR-20a) that would otherwise target PTEN mRNA for degradation. By knocking down PTENP1, siPTENP1 reduces the available "sponge" for these microRNAs, leading to decreased PTEN protein levels and subsequent activation of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. This activation promotes oncogenic processes including cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and resistance to chemotherapy (e.g., adriamycin) in various malignancies, most notably breast cancer. siPTENP1 is primarily utilized as a research tool to elucidate the functional significance of the PTENP1/PTEN axis in cancer progression.
