sIPV + tOPV (Candy) is a sequential immunization regimen developed by the Institute of Medical Biology, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (IMBCAMS) for the prevention of poliomyelitis. The regimen combines the Sabin-strain inactivated poliovirus vaccine (sIPV) with the trivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (tOPV) presented in a unique candy (dragee) formulation. The sIPV component is administered intramuscularly to induce systemic immunity against poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3, significantly reducing the risk of vaccine-associated paralytic polio (VAPP) compared to an all-OPV schedule. The tOPV component, administered orally as a sugar-coated pill, provides critical mucosal immunity in the intestinal tract, which is essential for preventing the shedding and transmission of the virus. This combination was specifically designed to align with the World Health Organization's Polio Eradication & Endgame Strategic Plan, facilitating the transition from oral vaccines to inactivated vaccines while maintaining high population immunity.
